INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Join this UCLA group on wdydwyd.ning.com for project announcements, key updates, possible exhibit opening event, etc. You'll first be asked to register. (and please use your full name so we can idetify you more easily. Afterwards, select "+ Join UCLA" in the upper right-hand corner next to your name. (Make sure that you don't turn off email notifications in your profile.)

  2. CREATE visual art that incorporates text in a creative way and answers the question “Why do you do what you do?” The text must be included in the image itself in a graphically way.

The following criteria will be used to select images for the exhibition and grade your assignment.
    • candor (and/or) personal vulnerability (and/or) humor in your message
    • relevance of imagery to the text, how well text is integrated into the image & whether the image offers additional layer of meaning to the overall message through contrast, irony or storytelling.
    • surprise & something unexpected
    • visual creativity

  3. Before you upload, please follow these SPECIFICATIONS in preparing the digital image that you create:

    • Format — JPEG (.jpg) or PNG (.png) formats only

    • Image resolution — at least 3000 pixels wide or larger (this would be 10-inches wide at 300dpi) The higher the resolution is better it would look in the exhibit, but the maximum file size you can upload is 10MB.

    • Proportion —your image should be proportional to 4x6, 8x12, 12x18, 20x30 (inches) — either vertical or horizontal. Here is a resolution table you can follow.

    • File name (important!) — use the following nominclature to name the image file which you will upload: UCLA08-AA10-LastName-FirstName.jpg (< this will ensure you get credit for the assignment)

    • If you're stumped by all this, ask a classmate for help on how to do these specifications

  4. UPLOAD to http://wdydwyd.ning.com/photo/photo/new by midnight Sun 10/26.

    a) Tag it “UCLA08”.

    b) Title image with your full name (FirstName LastName) & a key word or two from your image. (for example I might write, "Tony Deifell - stirred awake")

    c) (optional) Add a caption that says a little more about why you chose the answer you did.

  5. INVITE friends outside the class (or even outside UCLA) to submit an image for the exhibition Dec. 3-7, 2008 at Freud Playhouse on the UCLA campus. We will have hundreds of new images along the 100-foot long exhibit wall. Send them this webpage: http://wdydwyd.com/UCLALive

FAQ

  • Can I submit more than one?Yes, as many as you want.

  • Can I create an image with someone else's answer?Depends...

If you submit only one image, it should be your answer to "wdydwyd?". If you submit additional images, you may also create one with an answer from someone you ask. It's fun to ask other people why they do what they do.

  • Are there any tips for answering "wdydwyd?"Yes, go here.

  • I heard there was extra credit, what are the details? Yes. More info will be sent to UCLA Group.

The top 10 highest rated images by midnight Nov 1st will receive extra credit.

Rate your classmates' photos based on the criteria under point #2 above.

You may invite other friends outside of the class or school to rate photos as well.
Only images from your class will be included in the top 10. The top rated images will help influence us on which images to print larger for the exhibit at Freud Playhouse.

  • My camera or computer program only does certain sizes, what should I do?

A simple way to calculate the right dimension is take your longest side and multiply times 0.66. Whatever the difference is between the resulting number and the dimension that your program produces might get clipped off. A workaround is to leave some buffer in the image itself where there isn't something important that may be clipped. For example, an 11x17 image would clip off 1/6 inch on either side.
